Abstract
This chapter explores how ageing well in place is shaped not only by housing conditions, but by the wider neighbourhood environment context, and the extent it can enable older people to leave their homes, be mobile, participate in community life, and remain socially connected. An in-depth example of ‘Dolores’ is presented, illustrating how she navigates and negotiates leaving the home to carry out activities of meaning to her. The example illustrates how features of the built environment such as pavements, transport systems, and social spaces operate alongside informal social support networks to provide infrastructures of care. Finally, the chapter explores how caring principles could be more effectively embedded within policy to enhance the design of local neighbourhoods, to support older people to thrive in their communities.
