Abstract
This text explores how Architect Walter Segal developed a form of timber frame construction of great simplicity and low cost that facilitated self-build construction. The research followd Segal's development from his own temporary house, through a series of private houses, to community self-build projects. It suggests the reconfiguration of roles and relationships between designer, client and builder here has wider implication for the construction industry, in turn offering the building site as a location with potential for new forms of agency and empowerment.
