Abstract

Gort Scott’s new workspaces industry in east London show dexterous deployment of resources. The rehabilitation of existing buildings can often be thought of in terms of the restrictions and exclusions this places on development, and the friction between the heritage that must be preserved, and the new programme which it must accommodate to survive. But project architect Sela-Jaymes Taylor’s position as a RIBA registered conservation architect within the practice at Gort Scott enabled the Three Mills scheme to instead develop as a continuity of the architectural history. Through a dynamic and ongoing process of discovery, Taylor has been able to create a unified scheme that sensitively reveals the evolution of the site throughout its lifetime, whilst still boldly celebrating the new opportunities she has brought to the area.
